Physalis are grown for the decorative value of their brilliantly colored, swollen calyces. They resemble miniature "Chinese Lanterns", thereby providing its common name.

White flowers in June will form large, scarlet-orange pods in fall that are often used dried as decorations. This plant will also spread readily from underground runners.
