An Exciting Breakthrough in Peonies

Peonies are a classic, time-honored garden favorite, so it's especially exciting when we can offer something new and different to our customers.

Intersectional Peonies are a cross between the peony we all know and love and the Japanese tree peony. These plants combine the best qualities of both types and are so desirable that breeders have tried and failed for centuries to create them. The plants we're offering for the first time are fine examples created by the American breeder Roger Anderson.

A few reasons the "intersectionals" were created were to acquire yellow flowers on an herbaceous plant as well as to increase the flower size to up to 10" across. Some other breeding benefits include entirely new color breaks as well as sturdy stems that hold the flowers well above the lovely foliage.

These hybrids have a decidedly neat, dome-shaped habit with flowers spread evenly over the plant. The flower stalks also have many side shoots which produce flowers over an extended blooming season. In fact, many plants will produce a second flush of flowers if deadheaded.

Intersectional Peonies are as hardy and easy to grow as herbaceous varieties, but boast increased vigor and enhanced foliage that stays green and lush until the first frosts. Like traditional peonies, they will die right back in winter and new red-tinged shoots will appear in spring.

Quantities of these rare plants are extremely limited, so contact me by phone at 846-4398 or via e-mail at jim@estabrooksonline.com to find out more and place your order.
