Take Action This Earth Day

Today is Earth Day, and more than 1 billion people in 190 countries will be taking some sort of environmental action. You can be one of them by shopping at Estabrook's!

A portion of your purchases today, April 22nd, will be donated to an environmental charity local to each of our locations.

Here are the great non-profit groups we're proud to support today:

YARMOUTH

The Herbie Project The Yarmouth Tree Trust

The Town of Yarmouth lost "Herbie", New England’s largest American Elm tree, to Dutch Elm Disease earlier this year.

In honor of Herbie's legacy, the Town of Yarmouth seeks to replace this majestic tree and others lost in previous years with new, disease-resistant elms and other types of trees. In order to do this, Yarmouth is creating a Tree Trust, which seeks to care and eventually replace many of the majestic trees lining the streets.

SCARBOROUGH

Friends of Scarborough Marsh Friends of Scarborough Marsh

The Friends of Scarborough Marsh is a coalition of of concerned citizens, landowners, businesses, state and federal agencies, environmental organizations, and others. They have a common love for the Scarborough Marsh and a commitment to safeguard it for generations to come.

Established in 2000, Friends of Scarborough Marsh is an all-volunteer group dedicated to the conservation, protection, restoration, and enhancement of the Scarborough Marsh.

KENNEBUNK

The Kennebunk Land Trust The Kennebunk Land Trust

The Kennebunk Land Trust, originally known as the Ramanascho Land Preservation Trust, was founded in 1972 to preserve and protect significant natural spaces in the Kennebunk/Arundel Region.

As one of southern Maine's oldest working land trusts, the Trust has preserved over 3,400 acres of forest, fields and waterways, including 1,600 acres of the Kennebunk Plains. Of these preserved lands, more than 300 acres are conservation easements managed for private landowners.

The Environmental Benefit of Trees

Flowering Crabapple What better way to celebrate Earth Day than by planting a tree?

Along with the obvious benefits of added curb appeal, trees will also have a positive impact on the environment for years to come.

In fact, trees are one of the easiest and smartest ways to "go green". Take into consideration some of these facts and benefits:

Energy Consumption

Properly placed trees act like nature's ultimate insulation. According to the USDA Forest Service, strategically placed trees around a building can reduce air conditioning needs by 30% and can save 20-50% in energy used for heating. During the winter, evergreens planted on the north side of your home will intercept and slow cold winter winds to save on heating costs.

Air Quality

In addition to being wonderful landscape accents, trees also make the air we breathe cleaner by absorbing dangerous carbon dioxide. Poor air quality isn't a problem just in cities anymore - the combination of emissions from automobiles, urban sprawl and other pollutants has denegrated air quality across the globe. Over the course of a 50-year lifetime, a single tree generates $31,250 worth of oxygen and $62,000 worth of air pollution control.

Water Supply

The planting of trees also means improved water quality. Trees will filter rain water, resulting in less runoff and erosion. This allows more recharging of the ground water supply. Wooded areas will also help prevent the transport of sediment and chemicals into streams.
