Saving Your Plants from Frost Damage
The recent wave of cold weather has been a good reminder that no matter how warm April gets, you still need to be vigilant for late spring
frosts. If your plants have experienced damage from overnight frosts, don't panic. While there's little hope for annuals that have succumbed to the cold temperatures, trees, shrubs and perennials can be effectively rehabbed so that they can grow out of the damage. We recommend following these guidelines to get your frost damaged nursery plants back into shape: Purposeful Watering One of the most important things you can do to help your damaged plants is to water them. This will limit the stress they've endured and give them the strength they need to make it through the heat of summer. Give them a good soaking at least once a week right through the summer and think about using a root stimulator like Rock Phosphate or Bio-tone from Espoma. This will nurture strong roots below the ground that will provide the nutrients they need to bounce back. Prune the Damage Once the frost areas have dried, you can start to brush off the damaged growth and pick off any leaves that have been affected. Make sure to just remove the damaged areas. This will allow sunlight to reach any healthy areas and promote growth. If your plants have been severely damaged or the affected areas are at the bottom of the plant, cutting them back to the ground may be required. However, we recommend waiting a few weeks to see how the plants respond before you take such a drastic measure. Feed with Fertilizer Finally, apply an organic fertilizer like Plant-tone or Holly-tone once the plants start to actively grow again. This will help the plants respond to water and start to push new growth slowly for the remainder of the season. Be Patient Sometimes it doesn't feel like it, but it's actually a long growing season. Your plants may not look like you want them to right now, but by following these steps you can get them headed back in the right direction. Feel free to call, write or come talk to us if you ever have any questions. We're here to help you have a beautiful garden this season. |
