Summer Tree Planting Guide

Planting trees during the summer is as easy as planting them in the spring. The only difference is the amount of water they'll require to take root and establish themselves in your landscape. By following these simple steps, you can have a beautiful ornamental tree that will anchor your yard for many years to come. With 20% OFF all trees during August Bargain Days, you can even save some money too!

  1. Dig a hole almost as deep as the plant's root system and twice as wide. Loosen the soil surrounding the hole. If the plant is pot bound, score the roots with a sharp blade or knife.
  2. Set the plant in the hole at the same depth as it was previously planted in the pot or at the top of the balled and burlapped root ball. Do not remove the burlap from the root ball unless the burlap is non-biodegradable. Untie all string around the top of the root ball. Do not remove the wire basket. Remove any plastic string completely.
  3. Amend the existing soil dug from the hole with peat moss, cow manure or compost. Add one shovel of soil amending material to three shovel fulls of existing soil.
  4. Run water from the garden hose gently into the hole as you fill it with soil.
  5. Firm the soil around the base of the plant with your hands. Make a shallow basin with soil to hold water around the roots.
  6. Complete your planting by mulching with a 1-2" layer of bark or other material to help maintain moisture. Contact us about the fertilizer requirements for your particular plant.
  7. Appropriate watering is critical to the health and survival of your plant, especially when planting during the summer. Requirements will vary depending upon soil and waether conditions, but plants should not be allowed to dry out or sit in standing water. See the chart below for watering recommendations:
