Company History
You probably know Estabrook's as the place to go for flowers for the garden, trees and shrubs for your landscape, or fresh greens and poinsettias at Christmas. In 2026, Estabrook's is celebrating a major milestone - 75 years in business serving Yarmouth and the Southern Maine community.
From Poultry to Peppers to Petunias
The origins of Estabrook's trace back to 1951, when Myron L. Estabrook, Sr. and his wife Sadie moved to Yarmouth from Aroostook County and started a small poultry farm. They raised seven children in the white house that still stands on the Estabrook's property today.
Myron's son Melvin expanded the business by growing produce and, in the 1970s, made the decision to begin growing flowers as well. What started with annuals soon grew to include perennials, trees and shrubs when his grandson Tom studied horticulture and joined the business.
While fresh poultry and produce are no longer part of the operation, Estabrook's has remained a must-visit destination for Southern Maine gardeners for three quarters of a century.
Your Full Service Local Garden Center
Whether you are installing a landscape or simply filling window boxes, Estabrook's offers everything you need to be successful in and around the garden.
You will find thousands of trees, shrubs and perennials in the nursery, homegrown annuals and hanging baskets in a kaleidoscope of colors, and all the tools, pottery and supplies you need in the garden emporium.
Estabrook's also offers delivery of bulk products such as mulch and compost, plant delivery throughout Southern Maine, planting services in conjunction with Jack Ryan Landscaping, and garden consultation services.
Perhaps most important of all, you will find knowledgeable, friendly staff members who understand the unique challenges of gardening in Maine - experience built over 75 growing seasons.
A True Family Business
Estabrook's is not just family owned and operated - family members are involved in nearly every facet of the business, and all still call Yarmouth home.
Melvin and his wife Marjorie have since passed away, but all three of their children remain connected to the company. Tammy is the executive treasurer and a former president. Joleen is retired from day-to-day duties but serves as executive secretary. Tom Sr. works as a delivery driver.
They are joined by three of Melvin and Marjorie's grandsons. Tom serves as president and oversees the nursery. Andy is vice president and manages growing operations. Jonathan is the marketing and technology manager. A granddaughter, Emeline, also now works full-time in the nursery.
Jonathan's son Jacob represents the fifth generation and works part-time in the retail store.
Part of the Community
Located in a residential neighborhood on East Main Street in Yarmouth, Estabrook's has always been deeply connected to the local community.
The company grows many of the hanging baskets, garden mums and poinsettias used in local fundraisers and supports organizations such as the Yarmouth Community Garden, Yarmouth Education Foundation and Yarmouth Little League.
Joleen has served as president of the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce, and Tom Sr. is a retired member of the Yarmouth Fire Department and recipient of the town's Latchstring Award.
Tom is actively involved in statewide gardening initiatives including Plant Something! Plant Maine! and the Independent Garden Centers of Maine, and is a former president of the Maine Nursery and Landscape Association. Andy serves on the board of Yarmouth Little League and is actively involved in youth baseball coaching.
An Eye Toward the Future
As Estabrook's celebrates 75 years in business, the company continues to look ahead while honoring its roots.
Estabrook's operates a flagship location in Yarmouth, a seasonal location in Kennebunk that has served the community for more than a decade, and a state-of-the-art production facility in Pownal that allows the company to grow even more plants locally.
The company was recently recognized with the Geiger Environmental Leadership Award from the Maine Institute for Family-Owned Business for its commitment to sustainability.
Today, Estabrook's employs more than two dozen full-time, year-round staff members and upwards of 75 seasonal employees during peak season.
After 75 years, Estabrook's remains a full service, family owned and operated garden center proudly serving Maine gardeners.
