Deep Yarmouth roots

From Poultry to Peppers to Petunias.

You probably know Estabrook’s for garden flowers, landscape plants and Christmas greens. Our family’s Yarmouth roots reach back to 1919, when Myron L. Estabrook, Sr. came from Aroostook County to work at the paper mill and bought the farm that would become the family home and business.

Where it began

A Family Farm Takes Root

After coming to Yarmouth to work at the paper mill, Myron bought the farm in 1919. He and Sadie raised seven children in the white house that still stands on the Estabrook’s property today. Their son Melvin returned to the family’s poultry business after World War II and later expanded the farm by growing produce. In the 1970s, he made the decision to grow flowers as well.

What started with annuals grew to include perennials, trees and shrubs when Melvin’s grandson Tom studied horticulture and joined the business. Poultry and produce eventually gave way to plants, but the family’s hands-on approach never changed.

Growing Up in Yarmouth

From a new landscape to a single window box, Estabrook’s brings together thousands of trees, shrubs and perennials; homegrown annuals and hanging baskets; and the tools, pottery and supplies needed to help every garden thrive.

Our team also offers bulk material and plant delivery throughout Southern Maine, planting services in conjunction with Jack Ryan Landscaping, and garden consultations. Most importantly, customers find friendly people who understand Maine’s unique growing challenges, backed by experience built over 75 seasons.

Five generations

A True Family Business.

Family members remain involved in nearly every facet of the business, and all still call Yarmouth home.

Melvin and his wife Marjorie have since passed away, but all three of their children remain connected to the company. Tammy is executive treasurer and a former president. Joleen is retired from day-to-day duties but serves as executive secretary. Tom Sr. works as a delivery driver.

Three of Melvin and Marjorie’s grandsons help lead the business today. Tom serves as president and oversees the nursery, Andy is vice president and manages growing operations, and Jonathan is marketing and technology manager. Granddaughter Emeline works full-time in the nursery, while Jonathan’s son Jacob and Andy’s son Jack represent the fifth generation and both work part-time at Estabrook’s.

Part of the community

Growing Close to Home

Located in a residential neighborhood on East Main Street, Estabrook’s has always been deeply connected to Yarmouth. We grow hanging baskets, garden mums and poinsettias for local fundraisers and support organizations including the Yarmouth Community Garden, Yarmouth Education Foundation and Yarmouth Little League.

Our family has served the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce, Yarmouth Fire Department, statewide gardening initiatives and industry organizations. That same commitment continues through local youth sports, education and horticulture.

An eye toward the future

Honoring Our Roots, Still Growing

Estabrook’s now operates its flagship garden center in Yarmouth, a seasonal location in Kennebunk and a state-of-the-art production facility in Pownal that helps us grow more plants locally.

Our commitment to sustainability earned the Geiger Environmental Leadership Award from the Maine Institute for Family-Owned Business. Today, more than two dozen full-time employees and up to 75 seasonal team members carry the work forward.
